Stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. A type of data communications technology allowing fast data transmission over copper telephone lines. It`s called Asymmetric due to varying two way bandwidth (download and upload) rates used. The download data rate can generally can be in excess of six times faster than the upload data rate (for example download rate reaching 5.0 Mbps, whilst the upload rate only reaches 768Kbps). Under normal Internet access conditions users often download more than is uploaded so this generally does not impact on performance.
